AVX: Vs #6 of 6
Marvel Comics
Gillen & Cheung
The mini-series that focuses on expanding the battles ends with a complete dud. Wow, was this book awful. Instead of getting either a) two fights or b) an extended fight with Cyclops we get an extended fight between Hope and Wanda and a series of one or two page "What If" like fights. For four bucks this issue is a total waste of time and money. These mini-fights should have been add-ons to the main mini-series rather than the second half of an entire, over-priced book. This editorial move epitomizes how badly managed this event has been. In fact, Marvel thought so little of this book that they didn't include any credits on the cover. Skip this at all costs.
Gillen takes a fun angle with the Wanda versus Hope fight. Except this fight is supposed to be the big lead up to the final battle. Doesn't it make more sense to build up the drama rather than play it off in a satirical manner? Captain America scolds them as if they were children when he basically precipitated a fight with Cyclops to start off this event in the exact same way. It's a funny little fight but is this really the time for it?
The back of the book includes eight small fights. The only ones I really liked were the Ice Man and Iron Fist fight and the Red Hulk against Domino battle. The rest tried to be cute or funny and they completely failed the tone for what this book should have been about. The battles come off as making fun of this event and frankly it's insulting to the people who actually paid for this comic book.
Cheung does a nice job on pencils in the main feature. The art is basically a lot of splash pages which is fine. There is nothing too distinct about Hope or Wanda, both visually and as characters, which kind of removes any emotions the artwork wanted to push across. A noble effort for a bad idea.
Marvel had a chance to really do something cool and different with this mini-series. Instead they gave a bunch of high end talent a lot of generic fights and they ended it with one of the worst jokes of the event by making light of the finale. I can't believe I spent four bucks on this comic book.
