It started with Gambit. Soon, Elektra and Daredevil joined the circus. Then it shifted toward Jean Grey, the Scarlet Witch, Kid Pool, and even Ghost Rider. However, there’s still an obvious choice who’d been left off the list until now—Sabretooth.
We haven’t seen Victor Creed on the silver screen since 2009. While most X-Men fans would rather forget about Wolverine Origins, it did have one bright spot in Liev Schreiber. While Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth from X-Men and X2 was more comics accurate, Schreiber injected the character with humanity and more personality. As we saw in Deadpool 2, the Merc with a Mouth traveled back in time to kill the horrendous version of himself from that particular movie. It left a clear path to Schreiber’s Sabretooth.
Just like the rest of the Deadpool 3 gossip, nothing has been confirmed. Director Shawn Levy has been having fun with the gossip, saying that he loves the theories and that some will prove to be true. Which fan castings are true, he didn’t say. Still, of all the rumored cameos, the Sabretooth news would be among the most likely, hence the bump in his key issues.
IRON FIST #14
Sabretooth’s first appearance is gradually returning to prominence on the eBay sales charts thanks to the movie rumors. Here is one of the fun parts of adding Sabretooth to the MCU. In his early days, he was an Iron Fist villain before taking on the Heroes for Hire.
Nothing replaces Sabretooth and Wolverine’s blood feud. However, with the rumors that Marvel could pair Iron Fist and Luke Cage, it would make sense to add Sabretooth to their story.
UNCANNY X-MEN #212
Although the story has been retconned, the first time comic fans saw Wolverine and Sabretooth go toe-to-toe was in 1986’s UXM #212. This was part of the superb “Mutant Massacre” story that crossed over from Uncanny X-Men to X-Factor, New Mutants, Power Pack, and even Thor.
As part of Mister Sinister’s Marauders, Sabretooth helped murder his share of Morlocks, which led him to a legendary face-off with Wolverine.
SABRETOOTH AND THE EXILES #1
As unlikely as it seems, Sabretooth was paired with the multidimensional Exiles. During the Jonathan Hickman House of X run, Sabretooth was imprisoned inside the living island/nation of Krakoa. When he escaped, he aligned himself with the Exiles.
Considering the Exiles are a group of displaced variants, this could be where Deadpool 3 is headed. Reportedly, the film’s plot will center on Deadpool, Wolverine, and Mobius traversing the Multiverse, collecting variants along the way. If the gossip is true, we’ll see plenty of Fox’s Marvel characters on the screen, and that could very well include a Sabretooth/Wolverine reunion. By the end, Deadpool may recruit his own version of the Exiles.
SAVORING SABRETOOTH
No question, adding a heavy hitter like Sabretooth to the Deadpool 3 cast list would be a hit with fans. Whether it’s Liev Schreiber, Tyler Mane from the early X-Men films, or another actor, pairing him with Wolverine and Deadpool would make for entertaining cinema. Past that movie, there’s potential for him in the larger MCU, whether as a villain or an anti-hero.
If Marvel Studios introduces Laura Kinney (aka X-23, aka the all-new, all-different Wolverine), those two could have an interesting dichotomy.
