If The Flash is noted for anything, it’s the number of scene-stealing characters. While Michael Keaton’s Batman provided both the nostalgia and awe-inspiring moments, Sasha Calle’s Supergirl gave audiences a new interpretation of the classic character like never seen before.

Markedly different from the standard Supergirl fare, Calle’s version was calloused and brutal. In fact, the actor says several minutes of R-rated violence was left on the cutting room floor to help The Flash keep a PG-13 rating. That should make fans hungry for a director’s edition when the movie gets a home release.

Now that Supergirl has a new legion of fans thanks to the movie, they won’t have to wait too long for more adventures. Earlier this year, James Gunn announced that she will star in her first live-action movie since the abomination known as 1984’s Supergirl. It all adds up to a hot market for those Kara Zor-El key issues, and I have three for you to track down.

ACTION COMICS #252

Any Supergirl post worth its weight in virtual ink begins and ends with Action Comics #252. Published in 1959, this comic introduced the world to Kara Zor-El. No matter what interpretation is put on the screen or in a comic, collectors put this issue atop any wish lists they may have.

While Sasha Calle may not have sported the traditional blue-eyed, blonde-hair look of previous Supergirls, she is still Kara, and that leads to a hunt for AC #252.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US: YEAR THREE #7

Speaking of Calle, she made believers out of millions of Supergirl fans worldwide. Her no-nonsense approach to Kara Zor-El was something we didn’t know we needed until seeing The Flash. While the movie used the name Kara, Calle had the unmistakable look of Lara Lane-Kent from the Injustice comics.

From the first set photos of Calle in full costume, there has been speculation that she will usher in an Injustice live-action film. With Gunn promising more Elseworlds tales, there’s nothing that says it couldn’t happen, and that will continue to inspire buyers to hunt down Lara’s first appearance in Injustice: Year Three #7.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW #1

Since Gunn revealed the initial slate of DCU Chapter One films, Supergirl’s 2021 reinvention has been at the collecting forefront. The DC Studios co-chair announced that Kara would be starring in her own feature film, titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In the wake of The Flash, the premise of the comics seems much more relevant.

In Woman of Tomorrow, writer Tom King added a new layer to Kara’s past, giving her a traumatic history that made her far more aggressive. That coincides with the events from The Flash, and we saw Calle’s Supergirl with a similar attitude. That could mean that she will reprise the role for the film, and Calle has made it clear that she is interested in returning to the DCU

NEW BEGINNINGS

Who will play Supergirl for Woman of Tomorrow? With the release date tentatively scheduled for 2027, there’s plenty of time to cast the perfect choice for the role. Make no mistake, Calle should be in the running for the part, and she has met with Gunn and Peter Safran, so it appears to be on the table.

It appears the time is now for a tougher, more serious version of the character to be introduced to mainstream audiences, and that should make for the best on-screen product.
