Across the Spider-Verse continues to send shockwaves through the secondary market, and it has elevated Spider-Man 2099 #1 to the top position in the Hottest Comics rankings.
It’s time again to delve into the eBay sales charts. Ranked according to sales volume rather than fair market values, the Hottest Comics is your snapshot of what buying trends are happening on the most famous of auction sites. Dip your toes into the deep end of the pool, and you’ll find some interesting comics beginning to make noise.
1. SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1 (+8)
Miguel O’Hara has burst onto the mainstream scene in a major way. He is the primary antagonist of Across the Spider-Verse, and Oscar Isaac brings him to life in magical fashion. Although it’s a voice role, this may be the actor’s best Marvel performance so far.
The added attention on Spider-Man 2099 has compelled buyers to grab his first self-titled comic. It’s been enough for Spider-Man 2099 #1 to overthrow the Spider-Man #7 top-secret variant from its spot atop the Hottest Comics.
Of course, collectors know this isn’t considered Miguel’s first appearance. That distinction belongs to Amazing Spider-Man #365, but at least for now, it’s Spider-Man 2099 #1 that is getting all the attention.
2. ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 (+30)
Chasing Spider-Man 2099 #1 this week is Miles Morales’ first appearance in Ultimate Fallout #4. What makes its ranking so impressive is that UF #4 is a modern holy grail. Prices average close to $2k for the graded 9.8s. Even for ungraded copies, these comics bring top dollar.
Couple the fanfare for Across the Spider-Verse with Sony announcing a live-action Miles movie, and it gives buyers reason to pony up for Spider-Miles’ first appearance. Will it match last year’s record highs? That is a possibility considering Miles’ massive popularity at the moment.
38. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #10 (NEW TO THE LIST)
Shortly after Marvel Comics stirred the pot with its ROM omnibus announcement, the House of Ideas kept the secondary market on its toes with more news. This time, the publisher is resurrecting the Superior Spider-Man.
If you recall, this is the Doctor Octopus Spider-Man when Otto’s consciousness took over Peter Parker’s body. Could this signal an MCU or Spider-Verse introduction is coming? We can only hope.
75. IRON FIST #14 (NEW TO THE LIST)
One of Marvel’s most popular villains is back in the spotlight this week. Sabretooth’s first appearance in Iron Fist #14 is en vogue and cracked the top-100 best-selling comics on eBay. Between Wolverine and the Weapon X program linking Logan to Deadpool, it stands to reason that Sabretooth could be featured in Deadpool 3.
The other factor is X-Men ‘97. Since Sabretooth played a large role in the original cartoon, he could be in a featured role for the new cartoon series.
67. BATMAN: THE OFFICIAL MOTION PICTURE ADAPTATION PRESTIGE FORMAT (NEW TO THE LIST)
Michael Keaton has stolen the show when it comes to The Flash trailers. His return to the Batman universe is the perfect dose of nostalgia for what is basically the end of the former DCEU. Clearly, it’s prompting buyers to grab the comic book adaptation of 1989’s Batman.
In a way, you could call this the first appearance of Keaton’s Batman in a comic. Specifically, it’s the prestige format that is garnering the most attention, and it’s landed nearly inside the top half of the Hottest Comics index.
