I’m happy to be back again bringing you the latest quarterly installment of Undervalued Comics in 2023. Books that, in this volatile and news-sensitive market, actually seem to hold strong future value potential. If you missed any of my previous work with Undervalued Comics, you can find them here. With the writers' and screen actors' strikes eliminating most new announcements, all eyes are laser-focused on the upcoming MCU Phase 5, Phase 6, the Multiverse, new DCU projects, and The Marvels right now. That means a lot of books are being devalued out there. What books are slipping through the cracks to the point of being undervalued as we wind down the Summer of 2023? Let’s find out.

Ghost Rider #1

The first solo issue of a stand-alone Ghost Rider series has become a blazing-hot commodity in years past, but that does not mean values are still tumbling along with most other comics. Ghost Rider #1 CGC 9.0 copies that sold for $1400-$1600 in Spring 2022 now have been selling for less than $887 in late July according to GoCollect's sales database. I personally invested in a CGC 8.5 copy a couple of years back after I caught one for a good price, and I don’t have any doubt in its ability to rise, even if it’s seeing a momentary small dip.

A 7.0 copy sold for $575 in July after selling between $800-$1200 in June 2022. If you want to look further down the scale, three copies in a 5.0 grade sold for around $400. This book also holds additional value because of the cameo appearance of Son of Satan, an enduring foe for Ghost Rider. His dominance in Ghost Rider stories also has led to rising interest but stable/low prices for Ghost Rider #2.

But the best thing about this book is there have been zero confirmed rumors for the MCU and Ghost Rider. Several ideas have been percolating (such as Ryan Gosling and Norman Reedus as the blazing biker), but this book is dipping with no confirmed news. With no announcements in the immediate horizon, we may be able to continue to get this book on the cheap.

X-Men #94

Search through a list of all upcoming MCU properties over the next several years and will notice there is still a massive mutant-sized hole in that list (OK, I concede we are getting  Wolverine). Yes, we know Namor is a mutant. So is Ms. Marvel, apparently. We have the Wolverine news straight from Hugh Jackman’s mouth. But where are all those sporadic moments heading, and – more importantly – WHEN are they going to get there?

Often seen as the less-expensive companion book to Giant Size X-Men #1X-Men #94 picks up where that story leaves off and gives the first new story in the X-Men canon line in years. We get the second or third appearance of all of Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. Plus, as an added, bonus, it is the beginning of Chris Claremont’s unprecedented 16-year run working on X-Men.

Like with many mutant or X-Men books, I see this one receiving a massive, MASSIVE spike in value when some form of Charles Xavier’s team materializes. And it's the cheaper of the two "new team" X-Men books. Right now, we are seeing some incredible price drops compared to years past for this book. On the CGC census, the grade with the most copies is a CGC 7.5. Just in the last month, that grade has sold for $687 and $700 when it was $800 a month before that. It is miles away from the peak of $2,000 set in April 2021.

As with most books, we won’t see those kinds of values for a long time, but I see $700 as more of a floor and not a ceiling when the MCU heads down the mutant path in a more earnest way.

Daredevil #183

Here are a couple things we know now that summer 2023 and the Marvel slate of movies has almost come and gone. We have confirmation from Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home that two characters from the Netflix Marvel universe are alive and well in the MCU. Well, Kingpin might not be “well,” but you get what I mean. Daredevil and Kingpin are in our lives now.

If those two are around, others can’t be too far around. That means The Punisher. We all know about Amazing Spider-Man #129 and its iconic Bronze Age status. There is nothing undervalued or under the radar about that book. Marvel Preview #2 is criminally underrated as a magazine-style offering that is the first book to dive into Frank Castle’s classic origin story. There are very few on the CGC blue-label census, just under 600 to be exact. Even so, nine of the last 10 CGC 9.4 grades sold for between $400 and $500. The latest 9.6 sold for less than $1,100.

Daredevil #183 is one of those popular Copper Age books that everyone seems to have a couple of in their collection. You can find them cheap most places, but that's because the Daredevil and Punisher buzz has simmered down. It’s the first battle between Daredevil and Punisher. But perhaps because the raw copies are so prevalent, the CGC 9.8s (of which there are more than five hundred) only run for less around $350 in recent sales. That low number typically gives books like this room for upward momentum and would spike if and when some Daredevil/Punisher collaboration were to be confirmed.

A 9.8 in this book spiked at $583 in 2021, but I could see a $450 level happening again.
