James Gunn is at it once again -- he's bringing some of DC's deepest cuts to the small and big screen in the DCU. Let's take a look at one of those deep-cut characters: Weasel. Is there a chance he could become the next Rocket Raccoon or Peacemaker?

We all know that James Gunn has the Midas touch; he can transmute third-rate and previously unloveable comic book characters into beloved household names. He did it when they brought the previously unknown Guardians of the Galaxy to the MCU and then he did it again with Peacemaker. As a result of Gunn's work, the first appearances of the Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel Super-Heroes #18) and Peacemaker (Fightin' Five #40) have become important key issues.

Weasel Will Return to the DCU in Creature Commandos

As described in my fellow blogger's article, the first "chapter" of Gunn's DCU is entitled "Gods and Monsters." The "Gods" most certainly include characters like Superman and some of the "Monsters" include the Creature Commandos. Gunn's version of the team will feature a different roster: Rick Flag Sr., Eric Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dr. Nina Mazursky, G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, and Weasel.

Among these characters, Weasel is the only character who has already appeared, albeit briefly, in the DCU. Like many of the kooky Task Force X members who die in the opening scene of Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Weasel appears to have drowned when he's dropped off into the ocean and expected to swim to shore. No one had bothered to ask Weasel if he could swim. During the movie's mid-credits scene, however, we learn that Weasel did, in fact, survive and that Gunn must have had future plans for him. Now we know what those initial plans are.

Even though he only had a few minutes of screen time during The Suicide Squad, he turned into a fan favorite. Personally, I also think he had amazing and memorable character design, especially with his googly eyes. There's another reason why we can expect Weasel to play a recurring role in the future of the DCU. He's played by Sean Gunn, James' brother, who's famous for playing Kraglin in all three of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Weasel First Appears in Fury of Firestorm #35

Weasel's brief appearance in The Suicide Squad, however, did not translate into increased interest in his first appearance in Fury of Firestorm #35 back in 2021. For example, even though The Suicide Squad debuted at the height of the comic boom, at a time when investors inundated CGC with books to grade, few collectors submitted copies of this issue to CGC for grading. Specifically, the CGC Census includes only 36 blue label copies of this issue. Not surprisingly, there are few graded copies of this issue on eBay right now; however, if Weasel becomes a popular character, expect to see the number of copies on the Census to balloon.

Although there are only eleven 9.8s on the Census, this book is very affordable. According to GoCollect, the FMV of a 9.8 is $130. Considering its all-black cover, don't expect too many 9.8s on the Census in the future. In my opinion, this is a low-risk price point for this Copper Age book that has a lot of potential to grow in value.

What do you think? Would you invest in Weasel's first appearance at this price point? Please tell us in the comments section below!
