While most comic book fans are focused on James Gunn's 2025 reboot of Superman and the launch of the DC Universe (DCU), many do not realize that a little known animated TV show called Creature Commandos will serve as the first installment of Gunn's DCU. Similar to the Suicide Squad, the Creature Commandos is another black ops team of misfits assembled by Amanda Waller, the Nick Fury of the DCU.

Are key issues related to the Creature Commandos flying under the radar?

Weird War Tales #93 is generally holding onto its value.

Because it features their first team appearance, Weird War Tales #93 is the most important key issue related to the Creature Commandos. Let's take a closer look at the most common grade on the CGC Census for Weird War Tales #93: a 9.6. Prior to the announcement of Creature Commandos in early 2023, the value of a 9.6 sold in the $125 to $160 range for a six year period from 2016 through 2022.

When Gunn announced that Creature Commandos would receive their own TV show on Max, the value of a 9.6 exploded reaching an all-time high of $699 in April 2023. Since then, a 9.6 cooled off a bit selling for around $550 for the past year. Interestingly, the 30, 90 and one-year averages for a 9.6 are almost identical. Holding steady for the past year is an impressive feat considering most of the market has steadily declined over the past year.

The 1st appearances of several members of the Creature Commandos remain highly affordable.

While a 9.6 of Weird War Tales #96 is pretty expensive right now, you can purchase the first appearances of several members of the Commandos at affordable prices. For example, raw copies of the first appearance of Frankenstein (voiced by David Harbour in the TV show) in Seven Soldiers: Frankenstein #1 (2006) currently typically sell for less than $10 on eBay. Similarly, raw copies of the Bride of Frankenstein's first appearance in Seven Soldiers: Frankenstein #3 (2006) sell on eBay in the $7 to $20 range. There is virtually no supply of graded copies of this issue; surprisingly, CGC has only graded five copies of this issue.

Finally, I still believe that Weasel remains a darkhorse spec pick as I wrote in this blog back in 2023. According to GoCollect, the FMV of a CGC 9.6 copy (the most common grade on the CGC Census) of Weasel's first appearance in Fury of Firestorm #35 (1985) is only $77. Since the announcement of the show, this issue has lost approximately 62% of its value. Voiced by Sean Gunn, I thought Weasel's character design in The Suicide Squad was pure James Gunn. If he becomes a fan favorite -- the next Rocket Raccoon -- you might regret not picking up a high-grade copy of his first appearance for a mere $77.
