As I often like to quote from Thor…”ANOTHER!”

Yes friends, writing these X-Men related lists with VeVe SuperFan XhibitiOn (on X: @Richard__Prins + his “Article-X” X-Men content) has been such a blast we decided to have another go!  As a quick reminder, this is our opinion, not that of Marvel, VeVe or VeVe Comics, based on currently available stories we felt represent Deadpool’s key arcs or pivotal comic history moments that impact his development and fandoms.  Of course, with DP3 just releasing we also have had a lot of focus on Deadpool these past few weeks, along with his pal, Wolvie! This time though, we start at #1 and move up to our 10th pick...

For anyone not familiar, VeVe offers comic fans some of the most iconic & important key titles of all time, available digitally to purchase for full ownership!  Its partner site VeVe Comics, provides the latest, modern titles with same-day-drops from Marvel.  There are MANY more X-Men, Wolverine, Deadpool and other titles to find, along with 3D digital assets of key characters, if you find your collecting needs escalating, but now, let's CUT to our list!

"I find that a duck's opinion of me is very much influenced by whether or not I have bread." - Deadpool comic quote

1. New Mutants #98

The obvious #1 Deadpool comic as New Mutants #98 marks the First appearance of Deadpool

Over the years Deadpool has switched from a morally grey character to pretty much one of the good guys, even being on teams led by Captain America himself, but he arrived in New Mutants #98 as a full on villain to assassinate Cable.  Thankfully, Marvel’s Deathstroke didn’t succeed and the two lovebirds would go on many adventures together and become one of the most popular comic duos in the Marvel universe.

2. Deadpool #1

Deadpool’s first ongoing series with the first appearance of Blind Al. In this series Deadpool really became the Deadpool we know today. He is a nutjob and there is just something really off about him. Like Frank Castle, except Deadpool isn’t held back by a moral compass and thus, will kill anything and anyone and is even paid for it sometimes too - sweet!

One of the best portrayals of Deadpool you’ll find is in the film Hulk vs Wolverine, where in one scene Deadpool asks Omega Red’s permission to shoot the babies, where even for old Red that goes a bit too far, but to Deadpool ,this a totally normal question to ask.  That disconnect from reality mixed with comedic absurdity and slapstick is what really makes Deadpool, well… Deadpool.

The VeVe 'Secret Rare' variant cover pays direct homage to Blind Al (who hilariously shows in DP2's credits with 'Cinematography by BLIND AL), while the Marvel-VeVe Exclusive rare & ultra rare cover variants will also be available at SDCC 2024 to purchase as exclusive physical comics!

3. New Mutants #87

If Deadpool and Wolverine are like ketchup & mustard, then Cable and Deadpool are like peanut butter & jelly. One sweet, one salty.

Both chronically sick, they find ways to make each other more miserable in their already miserable lives.  Deadpool succeeds simply by breathing, as Thanos made sure he keeps breathing forever, having cursed Deadpool with immortality so he cannot be together with Lady Death.  Thanos wants to be her only fan, thus ensuring many more misadventures with the soldier of fortune and the actual real soldier.

New Mutants #87, with the first appearance of Cable is a must have for your Deadpool collection, because really, what is a hobby without a little saltiness? And if you've watched the original X-Men Animated Series, X-Men '97 or even Deadpool #2, you know how integrated Cable is with the X-Men team. With Kevin Feige commenting the next phase of the MCU will be mutant-focused, could we see a lot more Cable 'in the future?' (Pun INTENDED!)

4. Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth #7

This contains the first appearance of Lady Deadpool and dang has it been fun speculating who will portray her in the movie. I have a strong feeling it’s Kirk Cameron, it’s got to be him, you heard it here first folks - Keep the receipts!

We love the rare cover variantion VeVe - it’s the digital version of the 2nd print made by the creator himself, Rob Liefeld, who did feet…On the cover! The 1st print is a homage to the film Trainspotting, which is available as the common cover variant.

5. Howard the Duck #1

Break the 4th wall and put a chick in it!  Gwendolyn Poole takes wall breaking to a whole new level.  With Spider-Gwen becoming so popular, Marvel decided to create some variant covers with different Gwen Stacy’s as Marvel characters.

Thus, Gwenpool was born, becoming so popular Marvel decided to make her a real character who is canonically neither a Deadpool variant nor a Gwen Stacy variant.  So there’s that, yet she’s in our top 10 and there ain’t no wall stopping us doing from doing so!

For those statue collectors out there, don’t forget VeVe also offers their First Appearance HOWARD THE DUCK digital assets too!

6. Deadpool: The Circle Chase #1

The first limited Deadpool solo series, the Deadpool brand is growing and with it comes new villains.  This is also the first appearance of Slayback, a cyber-morph out of the Weapon-X program who happens to be an Australian-Canadian, although this one doesn’t have any hair at all.

Although Slayback gets killed often, he mysteriously keep reappearing without explanation.  Perhaps one day this will be explored with a cool backstory, making this a potential spec book.

7. Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe

Perhaps the most famous Deadpool story, it’s just absolutely hilarious and wrong, oh so wrong. It isn’t right and that’s who and what Deadpool is, Just. Not. Right.

He is convinced that the world around him is not real and he is the only one who knows that.  So, the only logical conclusion is to kill them all, ‘setting them free’.

Deadpool everyone.  I do love Susan Storm displaying how she is easily the most dangerous member of the Fantastic Four, power wise that is. It is very interesting to see how Deadpool is going to tackle opponents who are way stronger/better/smarter than him and I am not spoiling anything here, but he obviously has the plot armor of a Disney princess, which doesn’t make it less fun.

In fact, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is a must read for Deadpool fans, you’ll get your fan card revoked if you haven’t.  (Wrote about this on a previous June GoCollect blog if you want to check up on that too!  https://gocollect.com/blog/deadpool-kills-the-marvel-universe-on-veve)

8. Deadpool #45

Every Superhero needs a Supervillain who is the same as the main character, but bad.  The Flash has Reverse Flash, Wolverine has Sabretooth, Professor X has Cassandra Nova, and so on… Enter, Evil Deadpools first appearance.

The concept of Evil Deadpool is super interesting. What happens with all of Deadpool’s hacked off body parts?  Well, some of them were collected over the years by an evil scientist who kept them in a freezer.  When Deadpool stumbled upon his own body parts he thought, “ugh” and threw them in a dumpster.  Eventually the body parts defrosted though, and that healing factor kicked in.

Evil Deadpool’s costume is made out of all the different costumes Deadpool wore over the years and if we ever get a live or animated version, I want to hear Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colours!

9. Wolverine #88

The First Battle between Deadpool and Wolverine!  Like, just how much fun must it be to write battles like this?!?

One is immortal, the other pretty dang close, both have healing factors, knives & swords, and share one brain cell. Absolute Gold.

This book has been heating up ever since Deadpool and Wolverine III was announced, and if the trailers are any indication, this could be one of the most anticipated MCU fight sequences in years.  And don’t forget - VeVe offered up its exclusive Marvel rare & ultra covers as PHYSICAL variants only available at SDCC ’24!

10. Uncanny Avengers #5

The conclusion of Deadpool and Rogue’s love story.  Are you still, or just recovering from Mags & Rogue? (X-Men '97 was just FAN-Tastic BTW!!!)  Well, allow this bomb to be dropped on you!

Now, in our opinion, there are some worldly rules and one is that Rogue and Gambit are a couple. Without it, the world isn’t right.  However, this storyline is surprisingly wholesome.  Deadpool has become a part of the Uncanny Avengers, yes Deadpool in a real team led by Captain America. Although his first stint with the team wasn’t all that favorable for DP (well, things didn’t go so well for him trying out with the X-Men in the MCU's Deadpool #2 either), he got to kiss Rogue and hey, THAT is something.

I absolutely loved the ending and it even made me tear up a little. Now, this issue won’t break any collecting records, but it will collect bragging rights when you tell your buddies about this uncanny love story! (Available on the new VeVe Comics web app.)

GOOD 'OL BONUS STUFF!

For anyone new to the Deadpool character, Marvel's "Merc with a Mouth," he is best known for his sarcastic humor, continuous breaking of the fourth wall, a sarcasm pit that would scare Boba Fett and a mouth that pops out whatever hits his mind, usually inappropriate, often damned funny and of course, rated R. Here are a few great insights from TOYNK.com where their TOP 50 DEADPOOL QUOTES is 100% worth reading too!

Does Deadpool have a catchphrase?
"Chimichangas!" may be Deadpool's catchphrase & favorite word, encapsulating his love for the deep-fried delicacy & his unpredictable, fun-loving personality.

What is unique about Deadpool?
Deadpool's uniqueness lies in his ability to break the fourth wall and acknowledge his existence as a comic book character. This, combined with his regenerative healing factor, unmatched combat skills, and irreverent humor, makes him one of Marvel's most distinctive characters.

What is Deadpool's biggest fear?
Deadpool's biggest fear is clowns, a phobia known as coulrophobia. He considers them the greatest threat to Earth, ranking just after Galactus, showcasing his unique blend of humor and genuine fear within the Marvel universe. Read: Deadpool vs Deathstroke

Last, with so many anticipated characters coming in Deadpool 3 (Lady Deadpool, Baby Deadpool, Dogpool, BlakeLivelyPool LOL), VeVe & Marvel teamed up to provide a host of additional first-appearance Deadpool characters to add fun to any digital collection, including the odd throwback piece. Had to photo that one!)

We hope you enjoyed our list, and can't wait to see the feedback & highlights from fans who take in Deadpool 3.
