When the MCU adopts a storyline from the comics, it loosely adapts them (see, e.g., Civil War, Planet Hulk, Age of Ultron). So we shouldn't expect that the MCU will faithfully adapt Secret Invasion when it comes to Disney+ in two months. In the comics, Nick Fury assembles the Secret Warriors to help fight the Skrulls; will he assemble them again on the small screen?
We know Nick Fury won't be able to trust the Avengers that we know and love in Secret Invasion. As he told Captain America in The Winter Soldier, "Trust no one". Any one of them could be a Skrull impostor. Instead, he'll be forced to assemble a new team to battle the Skrulls -- new heroes the Skrulls wouldn't know about. Will it be the Secret Warriors or the Young Avengers? Will Chloe Bennet reprise her role from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Quake? If you enjoy the speculation game, here are a few books to consider:
A CGC 9.8 of Secret Warriors #1 Sold for $27 on March 15th
There are actually two teams of Secret Warriors in Marvel comics. In Secret Warriors #1, we see S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake, recruit Ms. Marvel, Moon Girl, Devil Dinosaur, Karnak, and Inferno to battle Hydra. I think it's likely we see Quake in Secret Invasion. Seeing her character would officially canonize Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a part of the MCU.
Plus, this book is dirt cheap right now. Just over a month ago, a CGC 9.8 copy sold for just $27. Considering that $27 doesn't even cover case costs, the buyer basically received a M/NM+ copy for free. If we see Quake lead a team similar to the version in this issue, I think it's possible that we could see a substantial jump in value. Right now, this is a very low-risk investment.
A CGC 9.8 of Mighty Avengers #13 Sold for $150 on March 15th
In Mighty Avengers #13, Nick Fury assembles the Secret Warriors, but with a different roster. Although Quake is still a part of the team, other members include Stonewall, Slingshot, Manifold, and the Druid. If you've never heard of these characters, that was part of the point -- Fury had to assemble heroes the Skrulls would never have heard of before.
Mighty Avengers #13 features the first appearances of these Warriors (with the exception of Quake). It seems as though some investors may be speculating on this issue since a CGC 9.8 copy sold for $150 about a month ago.
While there's a good chance that we see Quake, we've never seen Stonewall, Slingshot, Manifold or Druid in the MCU before. That would be a lot of new characters to introduce.
A CGC 9.8 of Young Avengers #1 Sold for $400 on April 16th
I think the most likely scenario is that Nick assembles at least some of the Young Avengers for the first time. Think about it -- we've already seen Patriot, Hawkeye, Wiccan, Speed, and Stature in the MCU. In addition, I don't think it would be a stretch if Iron Heart joined the MCU's iteration of the Young Avengers. If Fury had to assemble a team of super-powered teenagers who were largely unknown to the Skrulls, this would be the perfect way to introduce them.
As most collectors know, Young Avengers #1 features many first appearances of characters who have already appeared in the MCU. In addition, we'll likely see Iron Lad as well, since he's a Kang Variant in Avengers: Kang Dynasty. This could also be a great time to invest in this book.
Since reaching an all-time high of nearly $1,500 in May of 2021, this book has lost roughly 66% of its value. Considering that it's selling for a little less than what it sold for prior to the comic boom, this book may have over-corrected.
Would you invest in any of the comics above?
